Fall Session Lessons
Ecology
Lesson #1 of the Fall Session
This lesson teaches students about the 9 different biomes and animal adaptations through an activity where they design a creature adapted to a randomly assigned biome. They will also learn about Pittsburgh’s food chain through a matching activity.

Hydraulics
Lesson #2 of the Fall Session
This lesson teaches students how hydraulics use fluid pressure to create force through a mini hydraulic press. Students will also explore water pressure by testing how the height of a hole in a water bottle affects how far the water travels.

Chemistry
Lesson #3 of the Fall Session
This lesson introduces students to biology as the study of living things and explores how atoms, molecules, and their properties support life. Through invisible ink and milk-and-soap experiments, students discover how chemical changes, polarity, and surface tension help explain everyday observations and processes inside living organisms.

Energy Flow
Lesson #4 of the Fall Session
Students will explore how energy moves and changes forms, using fermentation as an example of how organisms convert and use energy from food. Through yeast fermentation and a balloon-powered car, they will connect chemical energy to potential and kinetic energy.

Circuits
Lesson #5 of the Fall Session
This lesson introduces the basics of circuitry at an elementary school level. By learning how and when electricity flows, students will be able to apply their new knowledge by making a working flashlight.
November 21st - 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM - The STEAM Studio (Warrendale, PA)
Physics
Lesson #6 of the Fall Session
Students will learn about physics concepts such as forces and kinematics through real-life experiments. Students will model a ramp and change variables to find the optimal ramp for the farthest distance.

Our Mission
STEM the Gap is a student-led nonprofit dedicated to empowering young girls to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on learning and real-world problem solving.
Founded by members of the PRHS Society of Women Engineers, our mission is to bridge opportunity gaps in STEM by building confidence, sparking creativity, and inspiring a lifelong passion for innovation. We offer free Saturday STEM classes for girls in grades 3–5, designed to make learning exciting, approachable, and fun.
